It was snowing again. Memories couldn't be ignored even with the weight of the kingship on his head and shoulders. Fingolfin walked through the halls of his home, checking on all who lived within the immediate walls of the stronghold. A permanent shiver worked hard to run through him and make him shake when white fell from the sky, but he never gave in. A good thick robe and thick soled boots on his feet would hide what did get through.
Fingolfin paused at one of the balconies looking out over the land, then to the railing. Drawn to stare out over at the white wash of all that could be seen. To the river just in sight. He would not give in even to the winter, though it was not so cold here. And they had supplies, and access to more. No one went hungry. He wasn't willing to send people out too long outside of hunting and defense.
A sense behind him had him smile suddenly and turn his head a little. "My shadow has returned," he greeted softly.
Nothing was warm enough. Fingon put on layers of robes and though the prospect of camping out in front of the fire seemed appealing, he still had duties to his people. He had to make sure everyone was warm and cared for, helping his father as much as he was able to.
Once everything was finished, Fingon grabbed another robe but rather putting it on himself he instead made his way to where he saw his father go. He didn't want to go outside but it was peaceful and soft out here. Unlike the harshness of the grinding ice, where nothing was gentle. It had been brutal for them all.
He smiled as Fingolfin spoke up. He never had been able to sneak up on his father no matter how much he had stalked him since the day he could walk. "I brought you another robe if you were cold," he said as he stepped ward. Snow fell in his dark hair, leaving small white specks slowly melting.
His eldest had always been kind and cared more about others than himself. Fingolfin was so very proud of him- of all his children, but Fingon above the rest. He tried not to favor one child above the rest like his own father had, having learned that lesson first hand. There was no need for a repeat.
Of all his children, Fingon had been the one who followed his every move the most- when the boy wasn't being entertained by Nelyafinwë. He always knew when any of his children were near, even more so when they attempted stealth!
Fingolfin finally turned, gaze torn at the last moment and coming to rest on Fingon with a hand raised in invitation. "How can I be cold when I have such a son as you?" When Fingon was near, instead of reaching for the robe he curled an arm around his son's shoulders to hold him close.
"I thought you may want the extra layer," Fingon said with a smile as he was pulled closer. For those who had survived the ice, often the cold was imagined to be worse with the echo of vivid memories which did not fade with time. He relaxed in his father's embrace, wrapping his arms around him in return. The winter months always made him seek out his father's comfort more than usual.
Sometimes he could tell that he was more like his father than his other siblings but he didn't want to put himself above them. Argon, Aredhel, and Turgon all deserved love as well. "The fires are burning warm now, I believe we should have enough wood for at least a week if not a little longer now."
The snow didn't hold as much darkness, pain, and grief for Maedhros, but he knew how Fingon felt about it. They were able to get away though, and he was quick to draw Fingon into his arms- watching the snow drift down from the safety of a warm room with a fire crackling behind them. It had a deadly beauty to it, the cold, and he couldn't imagine Fingon's trek through a frozen nightmare.
If there was one thing Fingon would brave the snow for it was Maedhros. The thought of being reunited with his cousin had keep him strong through his trek through the grinding ice.
By the time he got inside he was shaking from more than just the cold but when Maedhros pulled him into his arms Fingon relaxed against him once he had shed his heavy coat and boots. He looked up at his cousin with a smile. "I'm happy to see you," he murmured contently as he calmed down. It was warm, he wasn't in any danger and they were alone. This was perfect.
They were alone, and that was why Maedhros hesitated no longer and bent to kiss him deeply then to press their foreheads together gently with a quiet sigh. "As am I to see you," he smiled back, arms securely around Fingon. He had no plans on letting go any time soon. "Thank you for making the journey."
Fingon moaned softly as he kissed Maedhros back, wrapping his arms around his cousin's shoulders. "I will always make the journey to see you, no matter how far." Being in Maedhros's arms made it all worth it.
Centuries passed even in Valinor, but eventually the eldest of Feanor's sons let himself do more than just answer Mandos' summons. He was reborn, returned to a body whole and healthy, if so very young. Barely a teenager, by elven standards.
He made some people nervous, but he understood and left them alone. He had faced it all and survived. Had let himself heal, in time. So much time.
Now he walked paths of home, hair just as red as ever and feet bare to the ground. He spent more time alone than he had when he'd last been in Valinor. But Tirion still felt like home. His half-uncle had accepted him, which was more than he'd expected until those arms had opened and warm rooms had been offered in the Noldoran's own home.
But there was one person he knew had been reborn for some time now, that he hadn't dared approach yet, despite wanting to. Instead he'd tried to hide, to stay away as much as he could.
Centuries had dragged on for Fingon in Valinor. He was happy to be reunited with his family but at the same it felt empty. On one hand, he knew that Maedhros most likely was either in the Halls or still alive so he tried to assure himself that it was alright.
Each day dragged on though and each day he felt his heart getting heavier. He knew he shouldn't be selfish but he couldn't help it. He didn't want to accept an eternity without his other half.
He had noticed that others seemed to go out of their way to include him at gatherings and he wondered just how much they suspected. Fingon kept his feelings close to his heart though.
Fingon felt his heart stop again when his uncle had approached him one day to tell him the news. His first reaction was to want to run to Maedhros, to see him once more and catch him up into his arms but something made him pause.
What if Maedhros was angry at him? Disappointed? He hadn't been strong enough to hold out. He felt so caught up, wandering the halls in Tirion.
Yet it was inevitable that they should cross paths and one day Fingon turned a corner to come face to face with an Elf who was very familiar to him, despite his smaller size. "Maedhros..."
"I heard you returned-" Fingon trailed off. He didn't back away though he wasn't sure what to do. He bowed his head for a moment, not sure what Maedhros meant by that.
"I'm happy you've have been given another chance," he said eventually with an honest smile. There was a great deal he wanted to know but he wouldn't ask.
Maedhros was glad he and Fingon had gotten an apartment together while they finished school. No little brothers barging in at the worst times, demanding attention for this or that. Fingon's music was always nice to listen to and relax with.
Now if classes would only make a little more sense! He came home, quietly closing the door with a sigh to lean back against it, letting his bag drop down to the table. A hand came up to tug the tie off the end of his braid. "You home yet, Finno?"
Fingon had been glad to move out of the house shared with Maedhros's brothers. It never made for a good enviornment when he and Maedhros needed some time alone but there were brothers always bursting in the door. Not to mention the quiet was always a bonus.
He had come home early as it was a short day for him, flopping on their bed to get some work done while he could. Music played from his laptop and there were books scattered around him on the bed. He was comfortable in jeans, a loose t-shirt with his pulled up in a ponytail and out of his face.
As focused as he was, Fingon still looked up when he heard Maedhros coming in the door.
"I'm in here!" he called out, taking a moment to stretch out.
Well then. Maedhros left his bag where it was in favor of going to their room, discarding his jacket and letting it fall where it wanted without a second thought. It left him just in jeans and shirt, shoes also kicked off carelessly. Even more reason to have their own place, they could wear what they wanted, and discard what they didn't, without fear of judgement.
He smiled to see Fingon so studiously relaxed and crawled onto the bed to lean down for a soft kiss hello. "Don't let me distract you too much."
"You are such a distraction!" Fingon teased as he leaned in for a kiss. He didn't mind the distraction though because he loved Maedhros and he had been studying all day. It was time for a break.
"How was class?" he asked as he looked up at his cousin. "You look like you had a long day," he said with concern as he reached out to idly play with the red strands of his cousins's hair.
[Astaldo gave him a quick kiss after the ponies were taken care of.]
Perfect! [He quickly made his way up the ladder, looking around the space when he got up there. There were a few blankets and some hay and he arranged things the best he could before Tambe climbed up.
Once his lover made it up, Astaldo caught him up into his arms for a deep kiss, moaning softly.]
Maedhros had been away for...months. It felt far longer. He'd rode hard to make it before the paths were too snowed over for travel, but made it just as the blizzard threatened just steps behind.
He handed the reigns of his mount to the handler, making a quiet request the loyal beast be given special care for having carried him so well, so far, through such difficult conditions. Then he was escorted to Fingon's halls.
Niceties. Formal greeting and request of shelter through the harsh winter snows. A feast was planned for that night and finally he could sneak away to warm up. Sink into a steaming bath with a sigh, eyes closing. He knew Fingon would join him when he could, either before he was done, or after.
He was tired, true, but never too tired for Fingon.
Fingon had been so happy when he had heard his cousin had arrived. He knew the rumors around them about their relationship but he didn't care as he finished what he was doing, dropped it rather, and rushed to his cousin's rooms.
He slipped in the door quietly, well aware Maedhros would hear him anyway, but he pretended to be sneaky. Once the door was closed and locked behind him he slipped from his robes, crown set on the nearest table and hair jewels tossed aside without a thought. He grinned as he wiggled out of his robes and, once completely naked he ventured into the bathroom.
He decided to tease Maedhros though, wrapping a cloth around himself as he entered the bathroom. His black hair fell loose and unbraided around his shoulders, gold ribbons left on the bedroom floor.
"You didn't make room in the bath for me," he said with a pretend pout.
There would always be rumors. Maedhros heard them, but ignored them. So far no one seemed particularly bothered by the idea, only bemused because of all that he'd done. As long as they didn't try to get between he and Fingon, he could handle the whispers and stares.
Oh, he heard his cousin slip into his rooms. The smile came unbidden and unforced, eyes cracking open as Fingon came into the bathroom. Naked, but for cloth around his waist, as if Maedhros hadn't seen all of him many times before.
The pout was simply adorable. He chuckled softly, stretching languorously in the water. "Come join me and there will plenty of room for you." He held out his remaining hand. "I owe you a few kisses."
Not long after Elrond had sailed to Valinor, and a bit after he'd arrived (giving him some time to get reacquainted with his wife and start to know some more distant relatives) he learned of a particular reborn he'd heard many stories about, both growing up and during his learning after to become a Loremaster.
Findekano. Fingon. Once High King. Cousin to his foster fathers.
He went searching, following directions the Nolodoran gave him, and eventually heard music that seemed to call to him. He knew better than to ignore such a sign and followed it to a room. There, he found an elf that matched many descriptions and images he'd heard and seen of Findekano.
Elrond paused at the entrance, entranced with the beautiful sound and now without any hurry.
Fingon considered himself truly blessed to be able to be reborn and live with Maedhros. They lived separately from the others but it didn't matter to Fingon. He could see his family whenever he wanted and that was what it mattered.
He didn't live as a king and the house he shared with the love of his life was modest. He had decorated with flowers, making their home as comfortable and colorful as he possibly could.
Maedhros had left for the afternoon to visit family so Fingon had been left on his own, idly picking at his harp, humming to himself. He paused though when he heard a sound outside the door, sitting up. He hadn't been expecting any visitors today.
